The South Asian Football Confederation (SAF) has announced that the inaugural match of the prestigious SAAF Championship, which is set to begin in the Maldives on Friday, has been rescheduled.

Earlier, Nepal and Maldives were scheduled to meet in the inaugural match, but now Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will meet in the inaugural match as per the changed schedule.

The match of the 13th edition of the fair champion in Maldives is going to start from 15th September. 

According to the schedule released by the South Asian Football Federation (SAF) on Wednesday, the tournament will be held from October 1 to 13.

Playing against the previous winner Maldives, Nepal is going to start the 13th edition of the SAAF Championship. The five-nation fair championship is starting in Maldives from September 30.

The organizers of this edition will be Maldives, Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Bhutan and Pakistan will not participate. Bhutan withdrew from the tournament citing the Corona epidemic, while Pakistan Football Association was suspended by FIFA.

The South Asian Football Confederation (SAF) has made the game schedule public on Wednesday. 

The fair championship is being organized from 15 to 27 September. Nepal will start the tournament by playing Maldives. The match between Nepal and Maldives will be played on September 29 at the National Football Stadium in Male. Nepal will compete with Sri Lanka in the second match on October 30. Similarly, India will face Bangladesh in the final match of the league stage on September.

SAFF championship match schedule

They are being trained by head coach Abdullah Almutairi. He has selected 28 players in the third round on Monday alone. Ten players left the 38-member squad on Monday. Bharat Khawas, Vikram Lama, Ranjit Dhimal, George Prince Karki, Rajiv Lopchan, Sanjok Rai, Tridev Gurung, Sesehang Aangdembe, Randeep Poudel and Vishal Sunar are out.

All the matches of the tournament involving Maldives, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be played at the National Football Stadium in Male. 

After the league stage match of the competition, the top two teams will compete for the title on September 15. Nepal has been preparing for the championship for a long time.

According to the schedule, Maldives and Nepal will compete in the inaugural match. The game will be played at 4 pm local time. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will face each other in the second match on the same day.

Nepal will play the second match on October 2 against Sri Lanka, the third match on October 8 against India and the fourth and final match of the group stage on October 11 against Bangladesh. 

The top two teams of the group stage will compete for the title on October 13 in a single round robin competition.

The match between Nepal and Maldives has started in the semi-finals of the previous SAAF Nepal and Maldives SAAF Championship Football. 

Nepal captain Bharat Khawas has taken charge of the match which started at Bangabandhu National Stadium. Nepal is on a strategy to reach the final for the first time in its 25-year history by defeating Maldives.

Nepal, which is relatively strong in this competition, is on the verge of making a historic leap this time. Meanwhile, Maldives is also aiming to secure a place in the final by defeating Nepal. 

Nepal and Maldives last met in the semi-finals of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup in 2016 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. In that match, Nepal defeated Maldives 4-1. 

In the ongoing SAAF Championship, Nepal is the winner of Group A and has entered the semi-finals while Maldives is the runner-up of Group B. Nepal lost 2-1 to Pakistan in the first match but defeated Bhutan 4-0 in the second match and Bangladesh 2-0 in the last match. 

Meanwhile, Maldives drew 0-0 with Sri Lanka in their first match and lost 2-0 to India in their second match.

Maldives is the lucky team to reach the semifinals after beating Sri Lanka in the toss. 

Similarly, the match between India and Pakistan in the second semi-final will be played at 7 pm today.

The inaugural match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the National Football Stadium in Male City will start at 4 pm local time. Which will be 4:45 Nepali time. 

Similarly, Nepal and Maldives will meet in the second match on the same day. Which will start at 9 pm local time. The game will start at 9:45 Nepali time.  The schedule of other games has not been changed. 

This time a total of 5 teams from South Asia are participating in the competition. In South Asia, Nepal and Bhutan have yet to win a clean championship.
